Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my pet’s first appointment?

Please bring any previous medical records and a list of their current medications or prescriptions.

How often should my pet have a wellness exam?

For adult pets - we recommend annual wellness exams. For senior pets - we recommend wellness exams and comprehensive bloodwork every 6-12 months.

What vaccinations does my pet need?

Vaccinations can vary based on your pet’s individual needs. We consider things such as species, age and lifestyle. We will help create a vaccination plan during their visit.

What should I do if my pet is experiencing a medical emergency?

Please call us during normal business hours and plan to bring your pet to us right away. We will guide you in the right direction. For after hours emergencies, contact Blue Pearl at (210) 930-8383 or Hill Country Animal Emergency Hospital at (830) 510-3338.

How do I know if I need to bring my pet in for an exam?

Common signs that can warrant a visit: lethargy, decreased appetite, increased water intake, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, limping or any other unusual behavior that may have you worried.

Why does my pet need to be tested before they can be prescribed heartworm prevention?

Testing your dog for heartworms is a good place to start to ensure they are not positive for adult heartworms. Some of the heartworm preventions can be harmful if given to a heartworm positive dog as it can cause serious reactions.

Does my pet need heartworm and flea prevention all year long?

Yes. It does not get cold enough (for long enough) in our area to eliminate the risk. Mosquitoes and fleas are present all year long (and can come inside your home). The best way to protect your pet from fleas, ticks and heartworms is to keep them on a preventative all year long. Ask us what options are effective and safe for your pet.

Why does my cat need to be on heartworm prevention?

Cats run a risk regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor as mosquitoes can still come inside your home. There is currently no treatment for heartworm infection in cats. Keeping them on a heartworm prevention is the safest route to take.

Do I really need to do a fecal each year?

Pets do not always show signs of having intestinal parasites but they could be there. It is as simple as your pet coming in contact with contaminated soil or feces as they sniff around outside and then they lick their paws or nose after. Regular screening ensures that we are keeping your pet, your family and home safe. It’s stinky… we know… but it’s worth it to bring it in.

What are some signs of dental problems?

Common signs are bad breath, difficulty chewing, drooling, red-swollen-bleeding gums, tartar and pawing at the mouth.

How can I tell if my pet is experiencing pain?

Our pets like to be strong for us so sometimes it is hard to tell. Some signs can be crying out, limping, changes in behavior, decreased appetite and hesitant to move or jump. If you are unsure, we can always do a thorough exam and let you know what we think.
