Testing your dog for heartworms is a good place to start to ensure they are not positive for adult heartworms. Some of the heartworm preventions can be harmful if given to a heartworm positive dog as it can cause serious reactions.
Yes. It does not get cold enough (for long enough) in our area to eliminate the risk. Mosquitoes and fleas are present all year long (and can come inside your home). The best way to protect your pet from fleas, ticks and heartworms is to keep them on a preventative all year long. Ask us what options are effective and safe for your pet.
Cats run a risk regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor as mosquitoes can still come inside your home. There is currently no treatment for heartworm infection in cats. Keeping them on a heartworm prevention is the safest route to take.
Pets do not always show signs of having intestinal parasites but they could be there. It is as simple as your pet coming in contact with contaminated soil or feces as they sniff around outside and then they lick their paws or nose after. Regular screening ensures that we are keeping your pet, your family and home safe. It’s stinky… we know… but it’s worth it to bring it in.
Common signs are bad breath, difficulty chewing, drooling, red-swollen-bleeding gums, tartar and pawing at the mouth.
Our pets like to be strong for us so sometimes it is hard to tell. Some signs can be crying out, limping, changes in behavior, decreased appetite and hesitant to move or jump. If you are unsure, we can always do a thorough exam and let you know what we think.
